A Healthy Scalp & Hair

Murdock's Top Tips to Managing your Hair
Shampoo AND Condition
It is always advisable to use both shampoo and conditioner. This is because the shampoo works by way of acidic pH to the hair's natural pH5 in order to open cuticles on the hair and allow the excess oils, dirt and products to be stripped away by the lather. On rinsing after shampoo the hair is left with cuticle scales open which can make hair look dull and feel coarse and dry. By using a conditioner the which has less Acidity, the hair is restored to its natural state of pH 5.5. This closes the cuticles back down, trapping the moisture and essential oils delivered by the conditioner, leaving hair shinier, softer and moisturised.

Scalp Massage
We also store a lot of tension in our scalp due to the massive variety of facial and cranial  muscular movement. For this reason scalp massage is highly beneficial and immediately relaxing. Come in and have a shampoo and finish to enjoy a relaxing scalp massage.
People often forget to massage their scalp at home. This simple practice stimulates healthy oil production and precious blood circulation to the hair follicles. Take a few minutes each day to massage with or without scalp oil. All Murdock shampoo/cuts come with a relaxing head massage. Use Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash for an invigorating shampoo massage at home.
Using a traditional Military style flat brush with natural bristles such as those we stock by Kent actively stimulates  scalps. Kent's brushes use high quality boar bristles which are closest in surface texture to human hair so cause no damage.

Mild Products For Regular Use
You should opt for a good quality mild shampoo suitable for regular use such as Kevin Murphy Regular Wash. Cleansing agents from Lavender, Tea Tree and Geranium will leave your hair clean and avoid the limp/greasy appearance left by heavier products. Follow with a mild conditioner such as Kevin Murphy’s Regular Rinse. Avoid over-applying conditioner to the hair and ensure if you have finer hair to rinse very well. Thicker/ medium hair types can leave the condioner traces in as the essential oils will benefit your hair and scalp.

Nutrition
It is often said that a healthy scalp is linked to healthy nutrition. Be sure to balance your diet with enough carbohydrates and plenty of Vitamin B and Vitamin B6. Foods like cabbage, egg and yeast can help in the production of these vitamins and produce sulphur which is vital for the health of your scalp. Avocado if eaten daily will make your scalp produce really shiny hair.
Try washing your hair alternating between hot with cold water to increase circulation too.
If you suffer with a problem scalp* We would also recommend use of a medicated shampoo such as DR Harris medicated shampoo suitable for regular use on all hair types. * See additional section on Scalp conditions.

Week to week

Intensive Moisturising Products

Most natural hair soaks up moisture like a sponge. In addition to your daily routine be sure to use an intensive moisturizing shampoo and intensive conditioner at least once a week. We recommend DR Harris Coconut oil Shampoo and Coconut oil Conditioner with Aloe or DR Harris Lemon Cream Shampoo and Conditioner.

Dry & Damaged Hair

For dry and coarse hair use Kevin Murphy’s Born Again conditioning treatment. It contains Olive Leaf, Shea Butter and Omega oils 3 & 6 to soften and moisturise. Apply to scalp and hair for up to 20 minutes then rinse. To control frizz and tame unruly hair go for a leave-in treatment such as Kevin Murphy’s Leave-in Luxury. Containing extract of Peruvian Bark and Mango this should be used as alternative to other conditioners and will leave hair soft, rejuvenated and repaired!
