Here at Murdock we’re committed to helping out bright new artistic talent by offering our stores as spaces to display and sell artwork. Young photographer Rokas Darulis is the latest to be featured, with a collection of his prints being displayed in our Shoreditch salon.

Originally from Lithuania, Rokas is currently based in London. He had a somewhat nomadic adolescence, changing schools nine times in three different countries over twelve years. Despite a lack of stability and permanence, these experiences have allowed Rokas to collect an eclectic array of visual inspirations, which has obviously benefitted his life as a photographer. As in his life, change is a very important factor in his work, and Rokas strives to make his work stand out through distinctive aesthetics and striking visuals.

Having been published in various Lithuanian magazines, including IEVA, Pravda, Psichologija Tau, FOTO, Stilius, and Maxi Panele, the young artist is only just beginning his professional career; before moving to London, Rokas was crowned the best new artist of the year in Art category, at the Pravda magazine awards of 2008, a sure sign of his exciting potential.
Having experienced a wealth of people and places growing up, it is no surprise that Rokas’ main subject is people; it is fair to say he concentrates his work on portraiture and fashion portraits.

At Murdock we are displaying a series of portraits from a project about the Handlebar Moustache club of London, recently exhibited at the Old Truman Brewery, Studio D201 and the D&AD show.

This collection was born when Rokas became fascinated with the question of what drives men of all ages to put in a large amount of effort to grow and maintain such elaborate moustaches. The photographs are as much an exploration of the characters that are behind the moustaches as they are a documentary of the elaborate facial hair on display. To achieve this authenticity, all of the clothes belong to the sitters themselves and were not styled by the photographer. The collection can be viewed as an anthropological photographical study of a small group of people who, despite apparent differences, nurture a common style and look.
