Smells and scents can evoke memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously, which is why colognes that remind us of summer are so popular; we all like to reminisce about exotic holidays and lazy, sunny afternoons whilst sweating in an office cubicle or packed into the tube.

With this in mind, you can either go two ways this summer; firstly, pick a conventional summery fragrance, so something floral or citrus, and conjure up existing experiences, or you could try a bold new cologne and enjoy making some brand new memories.

HIERBAS DE IBIZA – AGUA DE COLONIAHierbas de Ibiza

Whether you’ve been or not, we all know about Ibiza’s reputation for hedonism – many a gentleman has suffered an unfortunate lapse into debauchery on the White Isle.

Agua de Colonia Fresca is a light, herb-citrus cologne inspired by the spirit and freedom of Ibiza. It’s composed entirely from the natural flora of the island, so really does capture Ibiza’s essence.

Summer Skincare

Male skin careSummer can be a time when looking good is effortless, a sun-kissed glow coupled with a cheery disposition and some light tailoring; perfect. Or it can be a nightmare; dry and sunburnt skin, raised stress levels and restrictive, sweaty clothing. But this worst-case scenario can be avoided through careful preparation and a suitable grooming regime.

Healthy skin is a great accessory in the warmer months. Increased outdoors-time, more daylight and less clothing mean your visage will be coming under far more scrutiny than during those winter months spent in the dark. A healthy glow is key, but it’s not always plain-sailing; we cover the main problem’s you’ll face this summer and the solutions available to you:

Dehydrated Skin

Hierbas de Ibiza Body BalmDehydrated skin is lacking in moisture, which can lead to tightness, loss of elasticity and a reduction in the skin’s effectiveness as a protective barrier, causing further problems such as sunburn. Insufficient fluid intake is one cause and can be simply remedied by making sure you drink plenty of water, but this will not single-handedly remedy or reverse surface dehydration.

In the summer, factors such as air-conditioning and a change in climate affect the skin. Although an aggressively air conditioned office may feel cool and relaxing, the room’s atmosphere is likely to be very dry, leading to the rapid evaporation of moisture from skin. So, what can you do? Well, adequate protection and moisturising is a must; rich and nourishing, DR Harris Almond Oil or Hierbas de Ibiza moisturising balm will help skin retain moisture, reducing the chances of dehydration.

Dry Skin

DR Harris Skin Tonic

Although it's easy to assume that they are the same problem, dry skin is a subtlely different affliction. Whereas the sun and wind can cause dehydration, environmental factors are less likely to play a direct part in the drying out of skin. Unsuitable product use is the main issue here; harsh chemicals found in synthetic cleansers and commercial soaps will carelessly remove essential oils from the skin, leaving it dry, flaky and vulnerable.

To ensure that this never becomes a problem for you, use only products made from natural ingredients such as DR Harris Mild Skin Tonic to tone and cleanse or Hierbas de Ibiza Aloe Vera soap. These will still leave the skin spotless and free of daily impurities, but in a much healthier condition and without the risk of long term damage.

This advice should help you maintain a healthy glow all year round.

Summer Fragrances

Any man of discerning taste appreciates that changing scents in line with seasonal developments is a prerequisite of smelling good. As summer approaches make sure you’re giving off the right vibes with our handy fragrance guide:

Santa Maria Novella – Melograno Santa Maria Novella Melograno

The main requirement of a fragrance for longer days and hotter nights is that it provides  subtantial refreshment without being overbearingly pungent.  Coming from a pharmacy house which has been around for eight centuries, this scent invokes a long forgotten memory of a ridiculously luxurious bar of soap, of pomegranates and other deliciously decadent fruits, of formal summer balls but also of lazy days in the endlessly clean sunshine. As you may have noticed, it is certainly an eclectic mix, with an extravagant blend of notes that may at times even veer towards the schizophrenic, but ultimately leaves you feeling sparkling, fresh and ageless.

Hierbas de IbizaHierbas de Ibiza

With an initial blast of lemon and zest, it’s easy to be worried that this fragrance has a little bit too much of the ‘urinal cake’ factor about it; but fear not, for the citrus notes are far too refined for anyone to mistake you for anything but the classiest lavatory. A unisex scent with a spicy floral kick, it retains enough masculinity to avoid being overly delicate, and is ideal to use in short blasts as a pick me up in more humid environments.

There are few more basic satisfactions than a good cup tea on a warm afternoon, so with this in mind there seems to be little wrong with aiming to smell like the gentleman’s choice of non-alcoholic beverage. Unlike Hierbas de Ibiza this is a much darker offering, with the citrus notes enveloped by a heady mix of smokiness and dark tea. A more mysterious and alluring scent, this is perfect for summer in the city, when despite the heat, it’ll be alright.

Another originally powerful lemon-fragranced cologne, this scent certainly has staying power. A sweeter option than Hierbas de Ibiza, the fruity aroma mellows into pleasingly familiar territory. Uncomplicatedly refreshing Freshing Cologne is perfect as a daytime aroma for when you’re not looking for anything too extroverted or lavish but want to retain a sense of the natural joys of summer.
