James Dean Sunglasses

In the words of Fred Allen: “Some movie stars wear their sunglasses even in church. They're afraid God might recognize them and ask for autographs”.

Sunglasses are an invaluable tool for the hot summer months – they have to be light, protective, and most of all, devastatingly stylish. The right pair can immediately update a tired wardrobe or transform a summer look.

Choose inspiration from the silver screen – are you James Dean? Colin Firth in A Single Man? Bond, James Bond? Here at Murdock, we have a stylish collection from vintage eyewear specialists, arckiv.. Utilising years of expertise in the history and design of eyewear, arckiv. have provided glasses for some of London’s finest theatre and film production companies. Each pair are characterised by a lightness of frame and structure, classic shape, authentic detailing and timeless masculine style.

The arckiv. Anglo American glasses give you that highly-desirable retro look, but with modern quality. Recently modelled by leading fashion blogger Prince Pelayo, these come in a distinctive, tortoise-shell pattern with a brown lens – invocative of a young James Dean whiling away the summer months with his beau Pier Angeli. Perfect for round and oval faces alike because of the smaller sized lenses, these are far more interesting and unique that the omnipresent Wayfarers and Clubmasters.

:Larry Gopnikarckiv.’s Nylor spectacles channel Colin Firth in Tom Ford’s A Single Man; they exude a timeless, sophisticated masculinity, and work well to create an understated look. You have to be careful with thick-lensed spectacles, as they can quite easily fall into the tragic hipster look or make you look like a 1950’s maths teacher (for how not to do thick-lensed glasses, see Larry Gopnik in the Coen Brothers’s A Serious Man). Firth gets the look just right – the thick lenses create a veneer of intellectualism and style – the core elements of his character George, the stylish grieving English teacher in 50’s America.

Or why not try the arckiv. Terry Brogan sunglasses? These aviator-style shades are straight out of the 1980’s, but in a surprisingly classy way. The tortoiseshell rim balances well with the dark blue-tinted lens, creating a look that exudes vintage rocker style for those hot months on the beach.

With many more options to choose from, why not pop over to either our Shoreditch or our Mayfair stores and find a movie star style for yourself.

The Murdock Guide to Shoreditch

The very first Murdock barbershop and grooming store opened in on Old Street back in 2006 the area of London infamous for being the birthplace of many fads and fashions; what better location to launch a new cutting edge male grooming enterprise?

From Shakespeare’s early shows to the death of a royal mistress, the east London area of Shoreditch has a historic tradition of eccentricity, vice and artistic performances.

In our time here over the last 4 years we have seen it change considerably with more retail, bars, dining, and fun to be had.  These changed have helped shape our store, with the reach of customers expanding from the old locals, stretching up into hackney, and all the way to Hollywood.

Here’s a quick look at some of Shoreditch’s places of interest:

AlbionBreakfast at Albion, Shoreditch

Located on the ground floor of the Boundary building, the Albion is one of three eateries on the site, so definitely a place of interest for the peckish gent. With a menu serving up hearty British café fare such as English breakfast, pies and fish and chips, diners at the Albion can enjoy traditional comfort foods in hip, modern surroundings.  The perfect place for an informal business lunch or a personal rendezvous.

Bordello

Whether you have a dirty weekend away planned or you’re looking to treat the other half (and yourself), you'll find what you're looking for at the aptly named Bordello. This East End boutique stocks raunchy lingerie by Der Kommissar, saucy honeymoon attire, exotic corsets, luxury toiletries and vintage boudoir-style furniture. Well worth a visit, particularly with Valentine’s Day creeping up.

PresentPresent, Shoreditch High Street

Present store owners Eddie Prendergast and Steve Davies are founders of men's mega-brand Duffer of St George, but don't hold that against them. Present's bright white, clinical interior houses labels from streetwear Billionaire Boys Club and Japanese Haversack to the smarter Raf by Raf Simons and the limited edition haute couture items. A great range of high quality menswear with something for every guy, the perfect destination after a trip to Murdock.

Shoreditch House

A private members club, Shoreditch House boShoreditch House rooftop poolasts a rooftop swimming pool, a gym, sauna and steam room facilities, a games room, numerous spaces for socialising and indulging and a clientele of the most interesting people in East London. Members and guests only, but not ridiculously exclusive so start hoping that you get an invite to a private party or meeting.

Not forgetting, of course, Murdock's Shoreditch store, located at 340 Old Street.
