It's the most wonderful time of the year, London Cocktail Week! On Wednesday, we'll be hosting progressive distillers The Botanist in our Seven Dials shop in a talk and tasting event where they'll be discussing how their passion for hand foraging for natural ingredients and offering some tasters.  

The Botanist are distillers like no other, producing a small-batch, artisanal gin from the Hebridean island of Islay. Having a core of the nine classic gin botanicals, The Botanist gin is then uniquely augmented by 22 hand-foraged island botanicals. Master-mixologist Danny Whelan has created an exclusive cocktail which will be served during the evening. We chatted to this drink making genius to find out about the liquid gold he's produced.


What will the limited edition Murdock London cocktail include?

The limited edition cocktail for Murdock's London is a drink called 'Passing Places'. It's a long, punch-styled drink of The Botanist Gin, Meadowsweet & Lemon Balm Iced Tea, a three-mint sherbet and a dash 'nine-carrot bitters', a recipe I've adapted from my good friend and foraging expert Mark Williams of Galloway Wild Foods, using 9 members of the carrot family to produce a bitters. A traditional hi-ball with a foraged twist.


What inspiration did you take to create the drink?

My inspiration for the drink was the wealth of the botanicals found throughout my environment and travels throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK, the name referencing the 'passing places' found on single-track roads in the countryside. Our environment has interesting ingredients in abundance, and if you pay enough attention you can find the flavours to make interesting, well balanced drinks. The three-mint sherbet adds apple-mint, spear-mint and water-mint - giving freshness and light fruitiness to the drink while combining three members of the mint family found in The Botanist's botanical mix. Meadowsweet and Lemon Balm are two more of the 22 foraged botanicals found in the gin, added through an iced tea mix from Hawthorn Drinks, which I operate with fellow Glaswegian bartender Fraser Barrett, a company focuses on foraged Scottish ingredients at it's core.


The event is guestlist only but at 8pm we'll be opening the doors to LCW wristband holders who'll be able to come in and try the cocktail for free.
